Before I jump into this downward slope topic, I ask that anyone reading this post thoroughly reads it with an open heart and clear mind. At times we react and speak from anger prematurely due to our personal feelings, beliefs, and morals without giving others a chance to formulate their own opinions. Too often I see people lead conversations in groups on social media without consulting experts, providing clear proof, or detailed explanations on their behalf. In other words, show some emotional intelligence on this topic before formulating your response to me. You will come to understand that my intentions are good.
As of late, JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has become vocal about her dislike of the trans community. Prior to this most of her social media activities, are of her arguing with critics and activists on Twitter going all the way back to 2021. Now, she’s gone after prominent trans gamers for her thoughts on whether or not supporting the upcoming Harry Potter game "Hogwarts Legacy" is harmful because of her views.See the problem is this, JK Rowling is shameless and from my personal observation is also a narcissist. I'm not an activist but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that J.K Rowling didn't hurt an entire group of people with no regret and that any project she benefits from should be vetted.
Over the past few years, it feels like we absorbed all this information and entertainment from writers, directors, and celebrities to only find out later that they are corrupted idiots or abusers. Even when they step down from a brand or business they previously represented, they are still entitled to some royalties.
Now the issue is becoming much bigger with various groups of people thinking that their biased opinions matter. I just want to point out that these groups of gamers have taken it upon themselves to paint a picture that they are victims for wanting to play Hogwarts Legacy. Well, let me be one of the few to tell you, to shut the fuck up. This is clearly not your fight, nor does what members and supporters of the trans community believe in personally affect you. The fact that you even have to question or explain your morals for wanting to play a game in the first place says a lot about you. When you draw attention to yourself on a subject that does not truly resonate with you, then you my friend have just given them a reason not to trust you. Let the LGBTQ community fight and protest JK Rowling as they see fit without your personal feelings on the matter. If you want to play the game then do that, but leave your comments on the LGBTQ community out of your personal agenda. No one is going to condemn you for minding your lane, but trying to gain public attention and clicks along the way, is not the right way.
What does this mean for content creators who want to cover Hogwarts Legacy?
One, this conversation is a slippery slope as it is, and took me a while to write it. All I can say is to choose your words and actions wisely but also show empathy if you plan to provide coverage on Hogwarts Legacy. Only you know what your personal relationships look like with those in the LGBTQ community. If you must, do the work to speak to everyone you know on a personal level about how they would feel if you chose to play the game. Communication can go a long way and will help you gain some clarity. As for everyone else like random activists and viewers, it's up to you to decide whether or not you care what others think you should do. Personally, I only make decisions for those I can vouch for and care about in my personal circles.
In conclusion, people are allowed to enjoy things but how you present the things you enjoy should be carefully considered. Remember it's not always about you. Just show more empathy and keep it a buck and you'll see that the issue does not end with you.
